3/28: a day trip in northumberland

Rented a car and headed down the back roads (while I got used to driving on the left) to alnwick, the town/castle from Harry Potter. After a bit of difficulty parking (hard to find a spot/lot), we learned that the castle wouldn’t open for the season until tomorrow. Ended up waking around town a little, then grabbing some tea (cream!) at a place on the main drag. Hard to complain about the rebound, but disappointing at least a little. Continued on to holy island and lindesfarne castle, this was fantastic. Cool to drive the causeway that goes underwater at high tide, cool to be on a spit with ocean on all sides, cool to see this village and castle that have stood for hundreds of years, likely raising sheep like they do now. The casket itself as 10 poounds to enter (no thanks), but walking the island was outstanding. Continued on to berwick, a walled town a little farther north, and grabbed a beer/app at a random pub. Strolled the wall, and took in the sea one more time. This is a really pretty town too, and again, lots of history.

Made it back to hexham with a setting sun and chose another pub for dinner, not quite as good as last nights, but fish and chips were right, and good beer makes it hard to complain.

Another good day.
