3/23 & 3/24: the trek east
We had an evening flight for our trip, so we didn’t have to leave the house until 4:30. Kind of nice to be able to use the morning to pack, run, and prep other items. Lightrailed to the airport, and met no lines of traffic. We were inside past security in less than one hour from learning our house. Pretty amazing, actually. Puttered around a little, then a lackluster dinner at Barrio.
As far as trans-Atlantic flights go, this one seemed one of the most painless. Read a little, slept a little, listened to a little music, and all of a sudden, we're landing in Iceland. Icelandair really sells it as a destination. They have all of these promo tourist videos about different sites on the island you can visit and Kate and I spent a lot of time soaking them in. And we did want here more as we exited the plane. Well done marketing. With that said, I’m glad this wasn’t our final destination. It was 32 with a slight snow as we boarded the shuttle to head to the plane. Just got done with that stuff, not a lot of desire to head right back to it. A former Hopkins student and his parents were headed there for spring break. I know this because he was one seat in front of me on the plane. Just can’t avoid it.
The trek from heathrow wasn’t confusing, but it was time consuming. Kind of cool so see the city slowly grow, but ansty to be done moving. The customs agent made a comment that our air B and B building had been in the news recently. She didn’t say why. The typical American in me immediately goes to: great someone got shot there. Turns out, it’s been a prostitute haven. Could be worse? Perhaps debatable. It’s not the cleanest halls, but if we otherwise hadn't been prompted to search, we'd probably never have known. At least after one day.
Took a quick nap, then a quick run to Hyde park. Only a mile away, so the location was a good choice, if not the locale.
Headed to foxes and hounds pub for a pre-dinner wine and beer in our neighborhood. Just what we were looking for: a quaint, cozy feel with some good beers on tap. We happily meandered the streets to our dinner choice Maroush II off Brompton road. A great Lebanese joint that rivaled any meal we’ve had on vacation. Babaganoush, falafels, and sharwarma for an excellent first meal in Britain. Wandered our way back, enjoying simply being out and about. Hard to complain about anything so far.
